Updates and Happenings

Dear Friends,

We came to Romania on February 28, 2018 and our round-trip ticket had us returning on September 5, 2018. Our goal was to travel around to the many churches throughout the country and to Romanian churches throughout Europe, continuing to raise awareness for people with special needs. Additionally, we have a new book about Becky’s life that we wanted to distribute as an encouragement for those individuals with special needs.

However, September 5th came and went, and we are still in Romania. We understand there is a need for us to stay here for an extended period. Throughout this time, we were able to go to many churches throughout Romania, Vienna, London, Torino and Chisinau. Another goal is to form support teams that would continue the vision of Becky’s Hope, once we return to the United States. In addition to impact on a spiritual nature, we want to have an impact on a practical level as well. One such proposed project is assisting in the building of handicap ramps at the many churches throughout the country. Currently, at First Baptist Church in Brasov, there is a ramp that is needing to be built because, in the community, there is a family with 7 disabled children that are not able to attend due to the inaccessibility to enter the building. The completion of such a project can open so many doors to those who have yet to hear the good news.

Because of lack of funds, we have not been able to put together the Becky's Hope retreats since 2015. However, with the limited funds, we were able to have a one-day meeting in Chisinau, Moldova for special needs persons where 100 people attended. And a secondary one-day meeting in Orhei, Moldova where 70 people attended. At these meetings we had a time of worship, sharing of testimonies and overall encouragement for those with special needs children where we once again talked about subjects of Forgiveness and Restoration. We were able to see the impact that these meetings had on so many as they had never been around such support and care. We also visited an orphanage with 200 disabled teenagers where we were able to bring them necessities such as groceries and we had the opportunity to sit and talk to them and listen to their stories and pray for them. We wished we could have done more for them, and it broke our hearts leaving the orphanage, knowing their pain and desire for future adoptive homes.

Besides the changes we’ve made to the ministry, we have also had to adjust living here for such an extended period. Living in a small 1-bedroom apartment, not having a car and having to travel by public transportation has been a fun but challenging adjustment. Traveling by train throughout the different European cities has become a norm for us. As a funny side note, clothes dryers are very rare and mostly unused in Romania, so we have to line dry our clothes which makes it even more fun when it’s snowing and subzero outside, and our shirts get frozen solid. However, what we have learned in our living this year is to focus on what Paul says in Philippians 4:11 “…for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content.”

At the start of 2019, we ask that you continue supporting us, not only through prayer, but also financially. Let’s make 2019 a year where many more people with disabilities in Romania will hear about the saving grace of Jesus Christ. Let’s get those ramps built, so that the disabled can find community in the church and in return for those churches to become more involved in their lives.

Thank you for your love and support.

In Christ,

 Lidia & Mircea Oprean

Trip to Romania - April 2017

I was honored to make my way back to Romania for a couple of reasons.

We will be releasing a new book later this year about Becky's life and testimonies from people that met her and had contact with her. After working with the publisher through email I needed to go on site to assist with the editing and layout before it gets printed. It will be in Romanian at first but planning to have it available in English as well next year.

Most importantly, I was able to travel to a few churches to continue raising awareness about people with special needs and telling them about our ministry.

- February 28: Teofania Baptist Church, Cluj

- March 12: Fortress Baptist Church, Alba Iulia

- March 16: Betel Evangelical Church, Codlea

- March 19: Hope and First Baptist Churches, Brasov

- March 26: Golgota Baptist Church, Bucharest

Following up with families is always a joy, but sometimes its with sorrow. In October 2015 there was a post about my sister, Cornelia, visiting Chris Constantin and his mother. Unfortunately, Chris' mom passed away and I was able to attend her funeral in Alba Iulia. Please keep this young man in your prayers as he is now on his own.

Visited a Hospice and Respite Care center and met with the parents of special needs children to pray together and share testimonies. Aside from providing hospice care they minister to the parents by offering to watch their children for one week at a time in order to give the parents a break and some much needed rest.

Thank you for your continued support and prayers.

Summary of Mission Trip in August & September

As previously posted, I had the opportunity to go back to Europe and speak about Becky's Hope to the Romanian churches located outside of Romania. I also had the pleasure and opportunity to meet with families in Romania, specifically focusing on the moms.

Although I had planned to be in places like Gratz, Austria and Bulgaria, the Lord had other plans for me. His plans are far greater than ours, and we praise Him for his protection and guidance for my group and I.

Speaking at the Romanian Baptist Church of Vienna, sharing the vision for Becky's Hope in Romania

On August 27th, we had a meeting with special needs individuals and their families. This took place at Betel Baptist Church in Cluj, Romania.

There was a need to build a temporary ramp for those in wheelchairs so that they could attend.

The following day, on August 28th at Betel Baptist Church in Cluj, Oana Albu, a young lady with Muscular Dystrophy gave her testimony.
Oana came to Christ 2 years ago and was at the Becky's Hope retreat last year. There she was able to take part in finding healing and deliverance from a life full of bitterness and anger due to her disability.

I find joy in visiting families that have children with special needs. It's so great to see that the hope and faith they have in God is what gives them peace and strength each day.

On September 16-25 I had the wonderful opportunity to present Becky's Hope to the Romanian Church in London, England for the very first time. Our goal is to reach out to as many Romanians living outside of Romania as possible, raising awareness and asking for them to get involved and to support and pray for the work that we do.

Trip to Romania, Austria, Bulgaria and England: August 5 - September 26

This summer, the Lord has opened up new opportunities for Becky's Hope. Beginning on August 5 - Sept 26, I will be presenting the vision for Becky's Hope Ministries in churches throughout Europe: Gratz, Austria; Sofia, Bulgaria; London, England and Romania. We are also excited to be doing something new this year. My service team and I have planned to visit those families with special needs children in their homes, bringing along a pastor from their local church. Specifically, we will also be hosting meetings with the families in Cluj on Aug 27th and in Petrosani on Sept 18th.

Our prayer and hope this year is that the churches and the pastors we are meeting with will recognize the needs of these families and that they willingly desire to get involved with our ministry. Working with the local churches and it's communities will be crucial in providing more help and support to families with special needs children.

We are asking for continued prayer and for God's protection during this time.

Blessings to you all

Meeting the Romanian President

We had the pleasure and honor to meet president Klaus Werner Iohannis of Romania on April 1, 2016. Because Beckys Hope is known by the Romanian Ambassador,George Maior, in Washington D.C., we were cordially invited to attend a special event where the Romanian President was to speak. He spoke about his desire for Romanians in America to invest, not just through monetary services, but through their time, in Romania.

We had the opportunity to sit down with the President for a few minutes, mentioning the 16 years of service that Becky's Hope has given to the Romanian families with special needs children and will continue to give in the future.  We believe that the meeting with President Iohannis and first lady Carmen will be a blessing for Becky's Hope.

Trip to Romania: April 11 - May 5

Mircea and I want to invest more time in Romania to work on changing the mentality of those who live there. We want to continue to relay the message that people with disabilities are not a nuisance but a privilegeand joy of discovering an unconditional love and true humanity towards such individuals.

Our hope is for the churches to become involved in the lives of families with special needs and to show Gods love by reaching out to such families in their cities and surrounding towns.

We will be in Bucuresti, Cluj, Timisoara, Arad and Oradea

We ask for prayer for protection, wisdom and open hearts for those who will be listening. May God speak to their hearts through our words.

May our God be glorified in all we do.

Fundraiser in Portland, OR - February 19th, 2016

Nancy Gray and I will be in Portland, OR on Friday, February 19th hosting a fundraiser at Agape Pentecostal Romanian Church. On Sunday, the 21st, we'll be speaking at Agape and at the Romanian Baptist Church of Portland. As a dear friend, who came with us to Romania 3 years ago and a board member of Becky's Hope, she will be sharing her experience of seeing first hand how this ministry is able to positively impact the lives of many people who have children with special needs. I will then share the new vision of Becky's Hope for the upcoming year.

Please pray for God's protection, open hearts and for His name to be glorified.

Praise God for His provision for Becky's Hope Ministries,

Lidia Oprean
